Le navire s'est encastré dans un récif vers 21H40, alors qu'il naviguait près de l'île du Giglio, (au sud de la Toscane) une zone naturelle dont les hauts fonds sont très prisés des plongeurs....
... Une.enquête nautique est en cours afin de déterminer les causes exactes de l'accident. Il pourrait s'agir d'une erreur de navigation, humaine ou technique car, apparemment, le navire se serait écarté de sa route. Il évoluait en tous cas bien trop près de la côte, avec un cap étrange qui le rapprochait progressivement de l'île. Au moment de l'accident, le commandant participait au dîner de gala, ce qui n'a rien d'anormal, l'état-major d'un navire comprenant d'autres officiers à même d'assurer la conduite du bateau. Cet accident est en tous cas le plus grave connu par Costa Croisières et le premier impliquant un paquebot géant.

Les scènes d'évacuation du paquebot ne sont pas sans rappeler celles du paquebot italien ANDREA DORIA en juillet 1956 où l'équipage avait montré un courage très relatif en quittant le navire avant les passagers.

Il reste désormais à voir comment le navire,... maintenant devenue une épave... pourra être enlevé de la côte de l'île pour cette côte protégée..
