Navigating in the more or less thick fog ; the Andrea Doria uses his radar; by moments we do not see farther than the point of the bow.
At 10:45 pm on the screen of the radar an officer tracks down an echo situated straight ahead front in approximately 17 miles.
The observations show that the ship follows a convergent parallel road but slightly on the starboard beam, ships should cross themselves in more than a mile (1.852m).
The observation by the radar continues, because of the mist no body see nothing.
Always in the mist the Andrea Doria imagines that the ship coming towards her is going to cross her on her right widely in approximately 2 miles.
Ships should cross themselves on the right-hand side, the starboard on starboard. She continues her road.
In the range of 8 miles, the precision of the radar increase : the distance estimated by crossing on the right would be only a little more than 1 mile; Captain Calamai makes take an angle of rudder of 4 ° on port to deviate from it a little more.
